FREE DIY Mantle & Corbels from Scrap Wood!

HI peps!

I am so excited to share with you how I made this awesome (or at least I think it's awesome) mantle. Technically it's more like a faux mantle, but who's keeping track?!

To start the story off, I will tell you what brought me to this situation. We have this big wall in my formal living room, since we moved in 3 years ago I have wanted a mantle, but didn't really want to fork out the big bucks to get one! As I was brainstorming different ideas, I came across this HUGE pile of old barn wood at my in-laws farm! You can't even image the thoughts that were racing through my head at all the possibilities that lye in that pile! My in-laws were using it for firewood, until I was like uh-uh, and grabbed a few of the beams! I don't think they realized how much people love old wood now days, especially beams! I need to take a picture of it so you can all see for yourself.

Okay, whoa, sorry for the tangent about that..geeze. Back to the reason of why you're here.

Anyway, I knew now that I had a huge beam for the shelf part, and then I thought that I would just buy some big corbels and bam..I would have my mantle! Not so fast, have you ever bought big corbels? They are expensive! (The real hefty wood ones, the only ones that could actually hold up a huge beam?) Yeah, that wasn't going to happen for under $300, so back to the drawing board. Until I stumbled upon this genius woman's post about how to make your own corbels. Stacy from Not Just a Housewife, posted THIS post on Tatertot's and Jello.

I followed her tutorial and made my own...okay well actually the hubby made them mostly...but again, who's keeping track?!

We made them a lot larger than she made hers, the pictures don't really show how big everything is! We went back to that pile of scrap wood so that we wouldn't have to go buy plywood. Then once ~~I we~~ my hubby was done cutting them out, I filled in holes with wood putty, painted them 4 different colors until I reverted back to white, then I distressed them.

I was going to leave the large beam in the natural state that it was, but then once I put it against my wall, it just wasn't as pretty. So I slapped some walnut stain on it, but the natural color still peps out along with some other old paint colors from it's previous life.

I seriously LOVE it! I am begging my hubby to get back in the shop and help me make some more corbels for my girls room, more of a scrolly look like Stacy used!

Halloween Mantle!!

My Halloween decor is finally coming together! I'm so excited to finally have a mantle! I will share with you in the next post about to make a mantle just like mine for FREE! Yes, all of that holding up my Halloween decor was FREE.99!

Anyway, here it is....

Since I don't have a fireplace underneath my "mantle" I have my sofa table there right now. I figured my ceilings are so high and there is a lot of room under it that it needed something. I had my couch there, but my husband thought that wasn't the most brilliant idea seeing that we have 3 very active kids and all. It adds another surface for decor I guess!

I still need to put up my Halloween banner, it's just not finished yet because I can't decide how I want it to look!

I made lots of chalkboard pumpkins last year and never put them up because I didn't have a mantle or any surface for them, now I do, and they are everywhere! :)

I found this awesome birdcage for $10 at my favorite thrift store in town, Gypsy Mama's. I put a black bird in it from the Dollar Tree. For a girls night craft we made these cute book page wreaths that are EVERYWHERE! I have been wanting to make one for over a year now, and it took a girls night to finally get it finished!

Sorry for the sideways photo, can not get this thing switched the right way for the life of me, I tried several different ways and it seemed like they worked until it loads on this page!

This is the start of my centerpiece for my dining table. Another chalkboard pumpkin, spiders that are all over my house because my son keeps putting them everywhere. (I told him one would be fin,e but he wants the whole bag out!) Then I made a quick place mate table runner, following the same steps as all my other place mat table runners from the dollar store!

I tried not to go with orange because I wanted more of a vintage looking Halloween this year. What do you think? I of course had to throw in my 2 favorite colors of purple and turquoise!

Happy Friday everyone!

I don't know about you, but I LOVE lists! I use to make lists all the time, but since having kids, I haven't been as on-top-of-things as I use to! All you moms that are...I totally envy you and your pretty list making skills.
Anyway, the other night I got my little cleaning station organized in the closet and thought that I needed to make my cleaning lists prettier! (It helps) I also decided since I took the time to make them so purrrrty.I had to share them with someone..and that someone is you!

Holy crap! I am so sorry for being MIA for the past 2 months!! Did you miss me?! I totally missed you!!

You know when something big happens and throws you off your routine? (just nod your head up and down)...Then it seems to be followed by like 3 more things that do the same?! Well, that happened to me and then before I knew it, it was 2 months later!!

"WOOD" you say I'm Scrap Happy....?

Hi friendsie friends! I have some good news!
I finally have an internet that allows a speed high enough to post pictures! Project time!
Here is my Chevron "Gallery" for kid's artwork!

Okay...so I have a ~~little~~ problem. I have a tendency to do a project and then I want to do like 100 different varieties of that same thing. It's annoying.

You know like when you start to paint, you can't just stop at one room, you want to paint them all. ~~Or like waxing a hairy man...maybe that's too graphic...ummm? Never mind.~~

Anyway, I have a whole bunch of scrap wood just laying around in our shop, so when my parents came down to visit I told my dad to pack his router so I could put him to work!

He routered all the scrap wood that I could find. I'm telling you, I am annoying when it comes to stuff like that. Then when my parents left I had to do something with all these pieces of random, routered wood. So the scrap happy season begins...

Starting with...

A "gallery" for my children's artwork.

I have seen these all over before, and just got around to doing it with routered scrap #1.

I wasn't sure where I was going to put it, because it was one of those random-need-to-make-something-out-of-this-scrap kind of thing. My kids LOVE it! I haven't ever put their work up before because I don't like clutter so my fridge wasn't an option. (Mean?). Now we have a "gallery" though! YAY!
I went through 3 different versions until I got one that I liked...
Here is Gallery #1

It was okay, but I didn't like it below that wreath because the browns clashed with each other...so I re-painted and ended up with this....Gallery #2

I liked this one the most because it was really neutral and that's at first what I wanted, but it blended in with the wall and I just didn't like it like that......

So I repainted one more time, and I think I this is my favorite. I decide if I was going to go bold I might as well go all the way right?! My hubby ~~pretty much~~ hates the chevron pattern, but I am deeply in love with it! I would have almost everything in my house in that pattern if I could! Anyway here it is...

Gallery #3

I used white vinyl, and in real life it pops out better, but I just ordered more brown from

SignWareHouse (great place to buy vinyl) and I will probably replace it!

I distressed the heck out of it and of course put a glaze over it!

Sorry about this picture, it shows up straight on everything and then for some reason when I put it here it won't go straight, even after I have rotated it and saved in every position! No worries, just turn your head! lol!

Heeeelo friends!

I have been so busy the past couple of weeks so sorry for neglecting you all! Thanks for sticking around!

One of the many things that I have been busy with is planning my sister's bridal shower! I am so excited because I love this type of thing...even though I have never planned, or even attended a bridal shower! I already have my ideas!

(There is always room for more ideas and tips, so if you have any EMAIL me PLEASE!)

I am going to do a Candy Buffet for the shower, the theme being "Love Sweet Love" or "Love is Sweet"...or if you have any other suggestions..hit me up!

No sew Crib Bedskirt (Tutu style)!

Do you remember awhile back when I made my Pottery Barn inspired bedskirt?

Well if you don't then you can go and check it out HERE, or you can just read the rest of this post because they are pretty much the same.

I made the first Pottery Barn Inspired Bedskirt for my 2 year old's bed, and since then I have received numerous emails about how to actually make the skirt. I started to write each person a detailed, step by step on the process, but now I have decided to just make a post about it!

The one I am making today is for my 1 year old's crib!

This is so inexpensive because you can buy tulle for $1 a yard at Hobby Lobby and then is all you need is ribbon, rope, or even a couple old shoe strings!

Depending on the size of bed you are doing and the amount of fullness that you want will make the difference of how much tulle you will need!

For my 2 year old's bed that was a queen, I used about 9 or 10 yards for each side. The one that I am doing today, for a crib, I used about 5 or 6 yards.

Simple.

So let's start!

First, get your tulle, fold and cut it in fourths or in halves if you have a longer length from your bed to your floor.

The roll up those little sections like a hot dog and cut about every 3 inches. It doesn't have to be perfect so just estimate the size you want and go for it!

They should look somewhat like these when you are done with a couple of rolls!

Also, my suggestion would be to do 1 yard increments at a time, otherwise you will try and cut and roll the tulle and it will all be uneven.

Then take your cut rolls and one at a time, unroll them, and tie them on your ribbon like this picture.

To make it easier I tap my ribbon to the desk top, or whatever surface is near you at the time. Then you can pull on it to tighten them so it makes it way faster!

Then keep going until you have done the length of the bed. I did mine in sections to make it easier. The I hot glued it on the wood thingy (I have no idea what it's called?) that the crib mattress goes on. I figure no one ever sees it except for me, so if I ever use this crib for another boy then i will just rip off the tutu as best as I can!

Another side note...if your girls are similar to mine, they won't at first understand that it is a tutu for the bed, leading them to of course try and rip it off the bed so they can wear it! Just make sure to have a little talk, or just apply extra strength velcro or glue and you'll be set!

That's it! Simple right? My girl's love them! They are obessed with tutus though, so maybe we are just crazy!

A couple of weeks ago I got this award from this sweet face Tiffany at Little Girl Tiffany Blue. I was so flattered, and I started working on the post for it, but obviously it has taken me awhile because I'm slow like that. Then I received the same award from this cute girly named Shannon at Enjoy Life and Love.

Okay so on to the 7 things about myself:

For real. This was hard for me. I started to struggle after the first one, so bare with me...if you get bored just jump to the end and visit all those sweet bloggers that I give the award to! That's all that matters, right?

1. I met my hubby in college, he was on the basketball team and I was on the volleyball team...it was love at first site for me. That being said, it took me almost the whole year to get the guts to say hi to him. We officially met at a St. Patrick's Day party in 2005, when I found out that he had been trying to talk to me all year too! (What a relief for me that he actually liked me back!) Fast forward to almost 6 years later, we are married with 3 kids! (it was fast, but slow).

2. I am really kind of tall. 6 foot even. I despised it growing up, because let's face it, what boy wants to date a tall, scrawny blonde with a flat chest. (is that too much too share?) Now that I have matured and got out in to the "real world" and met my hunk of a hubby, I love to be tall! I just hope that our kids love to be tall too, because the Hubs is a good 6'7"...we are destined to have giants.

(obviously that's why we both played college sports, as stated in the above)

3. I eat at least one bag of popcorn a day.Serious. I have since as far back as I can remember. I love me a good bag of popcorn. I also love chips, mostly any kind available, those are my indulgences. I dread the day that I will have to start to tame my habits because I am getting older, and I am afraid I won't be able to keep my self in shape like I used to. (tear)

4. I wanted to have 12 kids, but after I labored my first child, I decided I could probably stop at 0 children. Then I got pregnant with 2 more. Is it the last of my pregnancy days you ask?...probably not.

5. I love to clean. It's one of the best stress relievers I have ever known. Having 3 kids ranging in age from 1-4 years, I do my best. I think my house is only spotless for about 11 minutes before it's back to crazytown! Don't judge, mmmkay!

6. I LOVE to curl my eyelashes, it's an addiction. I have about 7 eyelash curlers stashed in different places just in case. Almost all my purses and diaper bags have one in them too.

7. I am from Wyoming. A kind of smaller town right outside of Yellowstone! I love it up there, such a gorgeous place. I miss it..but who doesn't miss their hometown a little, right?

Buttons...

Hello Hello!

I have had a lot of emails and comments concerning my buttons. I am in the middle of trying to find someone else to make me some! I have asked the lady that made mine if she could help me fix them since I paid $20 for each of those stinking things, and she isn't wanting to!

(What a jip, right?...is that how you spell "jip"? Do you know what that is, or is that a small town word? I hope it doesn't mean anything that would offend someone...if it does let me know so I can take it down and never use it again. Maybe I shouldn't use words that I don't know the meaning of?)

Anyway..

I have no idea why they aren't working, but I will be getting new ones soon...I think that the Feature button people can get to work, it's just the Party button that isn't, right?

I wish I was smart and could figure things out like that, but I am worse on computers than my 89 year old great grandma.Serious.

I will be working on it, thank you all for letting me know and thanks for trying to post them on your blogs!

Sorry for the lack of posting lately! I have had the worst Internet for over a month. We go through Alltel right now and they are in the middle of a switch to AT&T, it is ridiculous how slow our "high speed" Internet is! They said it should improve my the end of February, but I have been dealing with this since before Christmas! So Frustrating!!

Vanity...turned Entryway bench!

I finally have a project to show you!!
I finally got the knobs for this bench that I have been waiting on for almost 3 months now! I ordered them and they shipped me 1 of 12 total because the rest went on back order...go figure! They are an odd size so it already took me forever to find a place that sells them, so I was afraid to cancel that order in fear of not finding another place. Long story short, after getting a total of 4 packages of knobs every 2 weeks, I finally have enough for half of my vanity/bench and that will just have to do for now!

It used to be a vanity but when I bought it the mirrior was gone and my kids just wanted to sit on the middle part. That's when I decided that it worked better as a bench than a vanity anyway! It makes it nice for guests to be able to sit down on something when they put their shoes back on and not have to walk into my living room on the carpet! I have been dying to put something there since we moved in our house!
Anyway...

Here is the After:

This is what I started with,

I did this stencil design in vinyl so I could easily switch it out with a different color or design as my decor changes in my house! (I like change!)

It sits the this little nook right behind my door, above it is a long coat hanger.

I don't know if it's that noticable in the pictures, but there is a piece of wood that is on the back that sticks out and looks awkward, so I am trying to figure out how I want to disguise it! Any ideas would be very appreciated! I was either going to cut it, add molding, or a wood scroll?

I think I already want to change the color of the stencil to green or turquoise, or maybe some color that would go with my decor, but be totally random!

Hey everyone!
I hope you are all having a great Holiday and spending your days with your family having fun! We have been so busy, but it's been a blast! Can't wait for the new year!

Anyway, I just wanted to share this cute idea that was originally inspired by my place mats! I will just say that Amelia's are so much better! Trapped in San Diego!

Sorry, I haven't been on here in FOREVER! I am still alive, just haven't had time to sit down in about a week! We are on vacation in San Diego, and we are trapped in the resort we are staying at. The rain has been non-stop since we arrived and it has caused so much flooding it is scary! We are in Mission Valley which is the worst of the flooding here in San Diego, the golf course right next to us has it's hills sliding off into the roads, and the mall right behind us has half it's parking garage and lot submerged under water! I am just hoping that we will not have to evacuate in the middle of the night! The roads all around us are flooded, I wish that I could upload the pictures on this computer so you could all see! Maybe some of you have seen it on the news, it's incredible!

I better get back to the family, just thought that I would stop in and say hi! I will hopefully be back soon with some projects, as soon as all the holiday craziness calms down and we get back from California! Miss you all!

PB inspired Kid's Sleeping Bags! (Just in time for Holiday travel!)

For more than a few months now I have been wanting to make these cute little sleeping bags that I saw in Pottery Barn. In our family we call them "Cowboy beds". I knew that I wanted to for sure make one for my son because everywhere we travel, even if there is a bed, he never wants to sleep that far away from anyone. We usually wind up making him a "cowboy bed" out of random blankets that we have. When we go to motels it is a lot harder to make a comfy bed on the floor because usually all the other blankets in the room are needed by everyone else.

To make a long story short, my mom ending up helping me make these, all 3 in less than a day! I didn't think that I would have time to get ONE done before our trip next week, but with my mom's help anything can be possible! There will be a tutorial coming soon so you can all make one too if you want! We were originally going to do the puppy dog ones for the girls, but we aren't too into the puppy phase yet, so we decided to do owls (no surprise)! My mom is awesome at sewing so she made up the pattern to work for the owl head/pillows!

J.T. has more of a plain one, with a soft minky lining and a cute sporty pattern! We were going to make a Superman or Batman one, but we couldn't find the fabric, but I know he loves his sports too!

The beds are still at my parent's house, so I don't have a picture of the kids in them yet! I will make sure to get one so you can get a better idea of the size!

I actually made these a few weeks ago and I wasn't ready to share them because I wanted to embroider their names...but the hustle and bustle of the holidays has prevented me from getting all of that done! Just use your imagination if you will! (Thanks)

I wanted some fabric that coordinated with not only my Christmas tree and other decor, but also with my home decor! My old stockings clashed big time with the colors of my home and it drove be NUTS!

Seriously...I can not figure out how to make these straight pictures. They are straight until I upload them on here and then they get all wonky? I will keep trying to figure it out, it must be some kind of glitch or something? (SORRY)

I didn't make one fore me and the Mister yet, I am still trying to decide on what fabric.

Should I use two of the existing fabrics (leaving one stocking by it's self) or should I add two more coordinating fabrics? HELP!

P.S. Thank you all for your help on deciding what table runner I should do for sure! I got a lot of comments and emails, and the sum of them was 19 for #3! It was the most liked by far, so that's what it is now!! Thanks!

What woman wouldn't want a scarf this time of year!?

Loved this...inexpensive and simple to make too!

This one comes from 3125, it's called an Infinity Scarf, adorable right?!

She gives you a tutorial on how to make it, so you better hop on over there!

Of course, goodies are always a popular and simple thing to make, but it's all about the presentation right?

Rather than plopping them on a paper plate and throwing the saran wrap over it...Why not put them in a personalized jar?! I loved this idea, of course it's inexpensive ~~I'm featuring it right?~~ It looks so classy though and it looks like you put a lot of time and thought into it! How fun would these be to use some etching cream instead of vinyl initials, and to throw in some chocolate dipped fortune cookies?!? I'm totally doing this!

Inexpensive Christmas Table Runner!

I found these felt trees at the Dollar Tree and just grabbed them because I thought that they would come in handy for something. On my drive home I racked my brain thinking of ways that I could incorporate them into something, but nothing came to me. Once I got home I threw them on the table and my 4 year old son started playing with them and laying them out in a line...so in all fairness this is HIS table runner idea!

These are the felt trees, they came in white, red, and green. Then I added some like a half yard of burlap and sewed the edges, then frayed them to the stitch line. I liked the burlap to not hang off the side because everyone complains about it when it does, so I just framed out the middle of my table with it!

Table #3. This is the Hub's favorite, and maybe my other fav.

Table #4. This is the one that my son did that gave me the inspiration to use them as a table runner.

So this is where I need YOUR help!

What one should I do?

I can't decide! I want to sew the one that I choose in place so that when I clean my table off it will just stick together and I won't have to center all the pieces again!

I was going to do all Christmas things again, but then I saw this awesome wreath and I had to share it!

The girls at Three Sisters shared this idea of their Bead Wreath, and I totally am in love! I can't wait for my Christmas stuff to calm down so I can make a few of these to place around the house!

This isn't exactly Christmas related either, but it kind of is to me! I am going on a road trip with my 3 kids over Christmas, to San Diego, and I am trying to get lots of things to keep them busy! Holiday Wreath!

I have finally started my Christmas decor! I LOVE love LOVE this time of year...but who doesn't?!

The first thing that I started with was my outdoor wreath!

I bought this plain wreath last year on the after Christmas sells, I don't remember the price, but I know it had to be under $15 because I'm cheap and I know I wouldn't pay more than that!

I also got a couple boxes of ornaments for 50% off, making each box only $2.50, (the price was still on them). So all together this wreath only costs me less than $20!

These same types of wreaths cost anywhere from $40-$80, so I'm pretty pleased with the savings!

I think I am going to add one more box of ornaments though...I like shiny!

This is how it started...kind of...I had started it obviously, then I decided I would take a before picture.

It is a lighted wreath, but it still seemed kind of dull to me...

So I of course added some ribbon and my monogrammed "H" to add a little pizazz!

Definitely needs one more little box of ornaments don't ya think?!

So excited for these features today, I hope you will share my excitement with them too!

I love all things that shiny...it's my weakness, that is exactly what this WREATH is! I feel in love with this when I saw it over at Junkin' Junky! Isn't it GORGEOUS!?! You have to go over and check out how to make one, and look at all of Mel's other amazingly gorgeous creations! I have to say I could have done like my whole "Try it Tuesday" post on things on her site!

I thought this next idea was a cute spin on an old idea...it's a Christmas Countdown Frame! I've been wanting to do a countdown craft, just wasn't sure what kind of one until now! Head on over to A little of this, a little of that to get the full tutorial!

I guess I got a little ahead of myself on letting loose my Christmas excitement and forgetting that Thanksgiving is 2 days away. This next craft I might have to whip up tonight to have it in time for Turkey day, and maybe switch them up a bit so they can be used for Christmas and New Years! Aren't these place mats cute!? Fabric Wall of curtains!

I have two embarrassing problems:

I can't believe I am showing this to everyone...
Problem #1

Unsightly cords draped down my wall because, neither myself or my hubster are electricians.

P.S. I don't ever watch Soaps, sorry, I couldn't find the remote so it was left on that channel! :)

Problem # 2

A toilet view from our bed. Sexy right?

That was one thing that I noticed when we were looking at our house to buy it. When we went home to talk about things my hubster assured me that there was in fact a door there and that I must have not seen it. I mean who doesn't put a door from their bedroom to their toilet? Then after a quick buy, and move in day, I then assured him that there was in fact NOT a stinkin door there!

What the crap right? (no pun intended)

Anyway, after almost 3 years in the house and staring at the toilet every night as I lay my head to sleep, I decided I could not go on like this anymore. This is what we did. I love love love it!

I wanted it to go from wall to wall and touch the ceiling so there would be no gaps. We screwed those little loop things on the two side walls and then strung the wire through, then tightened it at the end. I also used some sticky back velcro to help close things up.

I want to get a hook to hold back the one drape from the door. For now the chair works!

My bathroom is the next project on my list of to-dos...don't judge!

If I had the rest of my room finished I would show you a picture of the whole room, but that will be in a few weeks..hopefully! I was afraid at first, that because the curtains are chocolate brown, they would make the room feel smaller, but I think it makes it look more GRAND because they are floor to ceiling and shimmery!

Now the T.V. looks like it's floating!

I also wanted to do a little stencil on the curtains, my significant other says no, he is old fashioned I guess. I think I might do it while he is at work and then he will come home and may have a seizure at first from the amount of drama on the wall, but I think after awhile his brain and eyes will adjust.

This is a mock-up of what it would look like if I decide to do the stencil. I would move the chair with the damask print away from the room, so there wouldn't be too much print.

I think I would do a goldish color of paint on the curtains so it wouldn't be too dramatic, but I think an off-white would look pretty too!

This is something that would be so awesome if you lived in an apartment and you couldn't paint, but you wanted the drama of a stenciled wall!
